Enumeration Test

Test Description

Cheese can be at high risk of bacterial contamination due to the nature of the manufacturing process. Utilising a range of bacteria to create the desired taste and appearance of the cheese there is a significant risk to contamination due to the conditions created within manufacture.

Both target organisms Escherichia coli and Coagulase Positive Staphylococci could be found in most domestic animals and humans. While presence of Coagulase Positive Staphylococci is associated with bovine mastitis, the Escherichia coli indicates faecal contamination.

The Escherichia coli test doesn’t include any toxin producing, or specifically pathogenic strains, of this organism, and so can be used by routine laboratories to carry out enumeration of E. coli as a key hygiene test for faecal contamination. Measurement of the staphylococci enterotoxin is not required.

This product is for quantitative analysis only, and FAPAS will accept results only reported in the right units, cfu/g. Any qualitative results will not be assessed.

The proficiency test is suitable for laboratories performing the most probable number (MPN) enumeration methods for Escherichia coli as well as the widely used pour-plate method.

This product is suitable for routine laboratory performance check as well as verification of standardised method or validation of a new laboratory method.

Unlike some providers, this material is created with a real matrix in order to get as close as possible to a real testing challenge.
