Test Description

Heavy, toxic metals such as arsenic, cadmium and lead are often found in food, either as a natural contaminant or a contaminant from production. Many heavy metals, such as Arsenic, can be absorbed within production from poor quality, or contaminated land. This uptake of heavy metals is of particularly high risk within wine due to the large amount of time taken for the grapes to grow and ripen. Combine this with the use of some heavy metal based pesticides, gives great importance in accurate testing to isolate and detect these potential contaminants within foodstuffs.

Due to the higher price of wine and by extension other alcoholic beverages the need to ensure high quality testing over a long term timescale is extremely important to mitigate any risks of contamination.

Heavy metals and other trace elements within foodstuffs must he quantified and controlled to ensure that high quality produce is passed to the consumer. Heavy metals and other trace elements can have a real impact on flavour, a main differentiator between wines. It is only through effective testing practises that manufacturers unique flavours can be safeguarded, so that manufacturers products can be sold as designed.

To ensure the high quality testing, effective quality assurance measures are required. Through use in partnership with Fapas proficiency tests, our quality control materials can be used to highlight areas of improvement over an extended timescale, which can aid the maintenance and protection of your testing methods  leading to high testing standards being passed to your customers.

The presence of metals in food is of particular concern due to their toxicity. These naturally occurring chemicals can occur as residues in food by a range of mechanisms such as their natural presence in the environment or contamination during food processing and storage. Their accumulation in the body can lead to harmful effects over time and their presence in foodstuffs is strictly regulated.

This strict regulation can challenge labs to prove their accurate testing credentials, and Fapas testing arrangements provide the best way to show this, offering a way to track your labs testing ability across a long timescale, evaluating and refining your quality control processes to provide highly accurate testing across a multitude of analytes within one test substance, as well as across many analyte/matrix combinations.
