This proficiency test is for the analysis of mycotoxins, DON and ZON, in maize oil.
Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi on agricultural commodities in the field or during storage. It is estimated at 25% of the world's food crops are affected, resulting in large commercial losses. Mycotoxins can cause serious health problems (including some being suspected carcinogens) and so are tightly regulated across the world. Mycotoxin contamination is the largest cause of rapid alerts raised against imported food products. Fapas has introduced multi-mycotoxin proficiency tests as well as those for emerging mycotoxins.
Toxins DON & ZON (deoxynivalenol and zearalenone respectively) are included in the highly regulated mycotoxins. EU legislation is set for ZON in maize oil. As such, the ability to highlight these contaminants within foodstuffs is of importance to protect both manufacturers from loss of reputation and consumers from unsafe produce.
Maize oil can be found in a number of foodstuffs such as margarine, but is also an extremely useful within cooking applications. Being generally less expensive than most vegetable oils it can be at risk of low quality produce through poor storage techniques. To mitigate this risk effective testing arrangements must be made to highlight any high, and potentially unsafe, levels of mycotoxins such as ZON in this maize oil.
