Test Description

Fapas employs multi-mycotoxin proficiency tests to challenge your laboratories to screen test materials for the identification of unknowns as is commonplace within routine testing practices. This gives the as close to a real life testing environment as possible from which to standardise and improve your testing practices.

This material is maize, which is provided as maize flour.  The analytes of interest on this occasion are Aflatoxins.  Aflatoxin is a potent carcinogen produced by the Aspergillus flavous and Aspergillus parasiticus moulds which commonly grow and can be found in corn, which can subsequently enter into animal feed. Usually caused by improper storage this contaminant is known to cause liver damage. The aflatoxins can be passed through from animal feeds to products such as eggs, milk products, and meats. As such strict control and monitoring practises should be employed. Proficiency testing maintains this high level of testing by providing a benchmark from which to evaluate your quality control methods, strengthen testing practices, or highlight any areas to improve within your laboratory methods.

Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi on agricultural commodities in the field or during storage.  It is estimated at 25% of the world's food crops are affected, resulting in large commercial losses. Mycotoxins can cause serious health problems (including some being suspected carcinogens) and so are tightly regulated across the world. Mycotoxin contamination is the largest cause of rapid alerts raised against imported food products.  Fapas has introduced multi-mycotoxin proficiency tests as well as those for emerging mycotoxins.
