Test Description

This test material is rice, which is provided as rice flour.  Rice flour has a number of uses within foodstuffs, both as a substitute for wheat flour, but also as a standalone ingredient in a range of processed foods. It is used within many foods suitable for freezing and as a thickening agent due to its liquid separation inhibiting characteristics.

The analytes of interest on this occasion are Aflatoxins. Aflatoxin is a potent carcinogen produced by the Aspergillus flavours and Aspergillus parasiticus moulds which commonly grow and can be found in cereals, which can subsequently enter into animal feed. As such it is of great importance to monitor and control levels of Aflatoxins in food and feed, which through the use of accurate testing practices is attained. These accurate testing practices are underpinned by strong proficiency testing and quality control measures to maintain and improve confidence in laboratory results.

Mycotoxins by extension are toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi on agricultural commodities in the field or during storage.  It is estimated at 25% of the world's food crops are affected, resulting in large commercial losses. Mycotoxins can cause serious health problems, including some being suspected carcinogens, and so are tightly regulated across the world. Mycotoxin contamination is the largest cause of rapid alerts raised against imported food products.  Fapas has introduced multi-mycotoxin proficiency tests as well as those for emerging mycotoxins.
