Test Description

The EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation No.1169/2011 lists 14 food allergens that must always be labelled in pre-packed and non-prepacked foods.  European legislation has set levels of gluten for foods that claim to be either 'gluten-free' or 'very low gluten'. These levels are: 'gluten-free' <20 mg/kg & 'very low gluten' <100 mg/kg. However, only foods with cereal ingredients that have been specially processed to remove the gluten may make a 'very low gluten' claim.  These regulations apply to all foods – pre-packed or sold loose, such as in health food stores or in catering establishments.  Milk is another of the allergens in this list and is found in many products.  Milk has many markers of detection, this test is based on casein levels.

To satisfy these food labelling requirements regulators challenge food testing labs to produce accurate, repeatable results from which to verify the food labelling claims made by manufacturers.

To achieve the high quality testing capabilities required, stringent quality control measures should be used. By using Fapas proficiency tests to benchmark your performance against other industry food laboratories important insights into your testing abilities can be found.

Fapas real food matrices build on this by achieve directly comparable results to inform your routine testing activities quickly and effectively.

Gluten is a well-known allergen, but analytes such as Casein may not be as recognisable to the public. As such, maintaining accurate testing standards is paramount to ensure overall food safety across Infant Soya Formula and other matrices.

It is important that consumers with food allergies or intolerances are able to make informed choices when choosing products; by taking part in this test you are ensuring an independent verification of your testing procedures to comply with regulation.  Results will be grouped and assessed according to the brand of ELISA kit used.  Thus limited data may preclude assessment of small categories of results.

This proficiency test can be purchased in partnership with  FCAL15-INF13QC Casein, Gluten & Milk in Infant Soya Formula Quality Control Material. This allows you to track your progress well after this proficiency test is complete, to provide immediate feedback on your quality control measures.
