Test Description

The EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation No.1169/2011 lists 14 food allergens that must always be labelled in pre-packed and non-prepacked foods.  Milk is one of the allergens in this list and is found in many products.  Milk has many markers of detection, this test is based on casein and whole milk equivalent levels.

It is important that consumers with food allergies or intolerances are able to make informed choices when choosing products. By taking part in this test you are ensuring an independent verification of your testing procedures to comply with regulation.  Results will be grouped and assessed according to the brand of ELISA kit used.  Thus limited data may preclude assessment of small categories of results.

Potential contamination or the knowing addition of allergens into foodstuffs can cause potentially harmful outcomes where the consumer is not aware, either through poor labelling or ineffective detection by testing laboratories.

To mitigate this risk, robust testing practices should be in place. These should be supported by effective proficiency testing measures to highlight any potential bias, or highlight any specific deficiencies in your laboratory's testing abilities.

Fapas proficiency tests take this one step further by offering real food matrices as standard, over that of synthetic test materials. This gives your laboratories a greater insight into your testing standards, through challenging your laboratory in a close to real testing environment.

Milk (and casein) can be found in a large number of foodstuffs, so utilising proficiency testing across a large range of matrices can challenge your laboratories to highlight potential contamination across a range of foodstuffs with credible, repeatable results.

This proficiency test can be purchased in partnership with  FCAL14-INF6QC Casein & Milk in Infant Breakfast Cereal Quality Control Material. This allows you to track your progress well after this proficiency test is complete, to provide immediate feedback on your quality control measures.
