Test Description

Animal products for human consumption are tightly legislated and closely monitored for compliance. Veterinary medicines used in animals are likely to have a pharmacological effect in humans. Hence, for many veterinary medicines, there are extremely low maximum residue limits or even no MRL (i.e. any detection is non-compliant). The Fapas proficiency test materials are produced in keeping with EU MRLs or minimum required performance limit (MRPL) where MRLs are not set. The result reporting requirements are also in keeping with quality control guidelines laid out in EC/657/2002. Fapas veterinary medicine proficiency test materials include incurred residues as well as fortified animal products. The proficiency tests are grouped in analytical chemical class/matrix combinations and combine identification and quantification. The proficiency tests are suitable for all methods, including screening methods (for the detection of total amount of that chemical class).

Coccidiostats are used within livestock production to maintain a low level of disease and promote high quality livestock from which to achieve large financial gains. When used within good farming practices low levels of residues can be achieved, yet when used as part of poor farming practices the excessive use of these veterinary medicines can result in a large amount of residues within consumer products. This can be detrimental for consumers health and can prove potentially harmful in large enough doses. As such it is imperative to highlight these high residue levels via effective, accurate testing practices.

Fapas proficiency testing can provide the direct insight you require into your routine analysis activities, identifying quickly and concisely the areas of improvement to focus on as part of your wider quality assurance programme. This is all aided through the use of real food matrices offered as part of Fapas proficiency tests, reducing the time it takes to form these valuable insights.

Chicken is a highly consumed product, and is used within a large amount of different foodstuffs. As such there is a large amount of demand, which may lead to the improper use of some veterinary medicines in an effort to satisfy this.
