Test Description

Per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFASs) are often referred to as 'forever chemcials' due to their inherent stability, and so by definition they are a persistant organic pollutant (POP) in the environment. However, some PFASs have specific properies which mean they are a useful ingredient in cosmetic products, helping to make the product smoother, easier to apply, or helping to make products 'waterproof'.

There is evidence, from studies carried out, that PFASs may be absorbed through the skin, which is of concern as these chemicals have been linked with cancer, reproductive issues, and damage to the immune system. However, it is not clear if the relatively small amounts used in cosmetics and the rate at which such chemicals are absorbed through the skin, pose a long-term threat to human health.

Some legislators are considering a ban on the use of PFASs in cosmetics and many manufactureres are looking to replace these ingedients voluntarily as a precaution. Proficiency testing activities can be used as part of a wider quality assurance programmes. Through benchmarking your current routine analysis ability, areas for improvement can be highlighted, from which to achieve high quality, credible test results for your customers.
