Enumeration Test

Test Description

Microbiological contamination of food can cause a range of sickness symptoms, the most extreme of which can result in hospitalisation, contamination can also cause food spoilage. Contamination can result from raw ingredients, poor sanitation or hygiene practices, or inappropriate storage conditions.

E. coli is a well-known organism of consumer interest.  Not all E. coli cause disease: the species is found as part of the normal, healthy human gut flora as well as in the environment. Therefore the presence of E. coli in processed food products can indicate faecal contamination. For this reason, E. coli is widely used as an ‘indicator organism’ for the presence of potentially more dangerous bacteria, such as Salmonella. Effective testing is required to highlight areas of potentially unsafe levels of E. coli contamination across a range of foodstuffs.

Fapas Food Microbiology proficiency test samples combine the test organisms into real food matrices or swabs, together with background flora to fully represent real-world samples.

This quantitative proficiency test evaluates your testing ability for the enumeration of E. coli in beef by the Most Probable Number (MPN) method. We have developed this new PT for an MPN specific proficiency test to meet customer demand.  Participants will enumerate by MPN and submit their results as MPN/g.

Beef is consumed globally, across a range of different growing practices. This can result in a range of potential contamination events that must be highlighted through your effective testing arrangement, which must, therefore, be safeguarded through robust quality assurance activities.

Proficiency testing activities from Fapas are ideal to evaluate your testing methods and identify improvements within your current routine analysis arrangement. From this, your wider quality assurance programmes can be informed.
