Fatty acid profile known when test material is analyzed. Some individual fatty acids will be requested but the exact list is not known until nearer the start date.
Within this proficiency test a comprehensive fat analysis will be evaluated and will include total fat, saturates, mono-unsaturates, poly-unsaturates and total trans fatty acids within Infant breakfast cereal. Individual fatty acids will be included where these are sufficiently abundant in the test material.
Fat is an essential part of the human diet, supplying nutritional components that the body needs in order to function. Too much fat in the diet, especially of nutritionally undesirable forms, can give rise to health problems. Hence, fat is subject to labelling requirements on food products and analyses are targeted towards this compliance. With regard to labelling compliance, Fapas proficiency tests ask for fat results to be submitted as g/100g of the sample, not of the total fat.
Fats within infant formula are integral for infant development, and as such should be tested to validate any claims made by manufacturers, as well as highlighting any poor quality products that may be passed to consumers.
