Test Description

Within this proficiency test your testing ability for Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are evaluated within Fish oil, with an option on Omega-9 fatty acids where these are sufficiently abundant in the test material.

Fat is an essential part of the human diet, supplying nutritional components that the body needs in order to function. Too much fat in the diet, especially of nutritionally undesirable forms, can give rise to health problems. Hence, fat is subject to labelling requirements on food products and analyses are targeted towards this compliance. With regard to labelling compliance, Fapas proficiency tests ask for fat results to be submitted as g/100g of the sample, not of the total fat. Some fatty acids have promoted health properties, such omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids from oil-rich fish.

Omega fatty acids are well known for their health benefits as they are integral for both cell function and form the foundation to produce other useful fatty acids. As such effective testing practices should be undertaken to verify any manufacturer claims, as well as highlight any low quality produce being offered to consumers.

To maintain this accurate testing required, Fapas proficiency tests should be used as part of a well-designed quality assurance programme, to highlight any areas of improvement required within your current testing arrangement. Fapas proficiency testing  can also help highlight areas of unconscious bias within your testing arrangement, from which to address and obtain accurate, repeatable results.
