Test Description

Furans are contaminants found within foodstuffs which have been heated as part of their production processes. Examples include crisps and fries among countless others.

Although present at low levels within most foodstuffs, such toxic compounds should be continually monitored to highlight any potentially unsafe levels.  Within coffee, both the roasting and the brewing process affect the levels of furans present within coffee.

Coffee is consumed all over the world in increasingly large quantities. As such there is great demand, which continues to increase. Producers & manufacturers can struggle to cope with this massive demand, leading to poor production processes. This can increase the risk of potentially high levels of furans being consumed by the general population, especially as espresso coffee continues to grow in popularity. Espresso contains higher furan levels compared to instant and decaf.

To maintain the highly accurate testing processes needed to highlight potentially high levels of contaminants within coffee, proficiency testing activities should be employed. Real food matrices are used to give comparable results to your routine analysis measures. This can help to ensure your testing is fit for purpose across and any issues investigated as and when required.
