Test Description

Lactose intolerance, where the body does not produce enough of the enzyme lactase to digest all the lactose that may be consumed, is a widespread condition that is estimated to affect up to 68% of the world's population. It is a condition that is least likely to affect people of European origin and most likely to affect people of African Asian or Native and Latin American origin. There are genetic causes (lack the genes to produce lactase) and secondary causes (coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), gastrointestinal infections and abdominal surgery). In order to minimise the symptoms associated with lactose intolerance, many consumers look to omit or reduce the level of lactose in their diet. With the exception of infant furmula (where to be declared lactose-free the level must not exceed 10 mg/100 Kcal) there is no coordinated level agreed for 'lactose-free', but the most common level appears to be <0.1g / 100 g (<0.1 %), though some use a lower level of <0.01g / 100 g (< 0.01 %). This proficiency test will challenge the laboratory's ability to determine the individual sugars in the material including Lactose.
