Test Description

There are thousands of ingredients used to make our foods.  These ingredients have useful functions that enable consumers to enjoy flavourful, nutritious and safe food.  Additives, colourings and preservatives all play a part in the ingredients we see in our foods today and they perform a variety of useful functions in foods that consumers take for granted.

However, these ingredients need to be monitored too to ensure that the levels added are not in excess of the appropriate guidelines or that a banned ingredient/component is not being added deliberately or unintentionally.  For this reason Fapas provides a wide range of proficiency tests which encompasses this area of interest.

Two of the analytes are specific to the chocolate component of this particular matrix, caffeine and theobromine. The sweetness and preservative analytes are total sugars and sorbic acid.

Theobromine and caffeine share many similar traits such as improving alertness end perceived energy levels. As such they should be moderated in similar ways, and share similar side-effects when consumed above recommended levels.

To mitigate these risks, effective testing activities should be undertaken to accurately quantify the levels of these analytes in our food. This allows consumers to make reliably informed decisions when addressing preservatives and specific analytes within their diets.

Quality control materials are the perfect way to track your progress against a control. They are used to validate whether a testing instrument or process is operating within pre-defined specifications. This validation process makes sure your test results are as close to the true value as possible, and therefore your testing process is a credible as it can be.
