Heavy, toxic metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury are often found in food, either as a natural contaminant or a contaminant from production. Arsenic can be taken in directly from soil and into growing fruit during production. As such it is difficult to control the amount of Arsenic and other heavy metals in these foodstuffs. It is therefore important to show strong, accurate testing capabilities throughout a range of specific analytes in matrices such as grapefruit. Arsenic and other heavy metals can be found within manufacturing processes as well as in contaminated land. This can increase the risk of heavy metals within foodstuffs to consumers.
The presence of metals in food is of particular concern due to their toxicity. These naturally occurring chemicals can occur as residues in food by a range of mechanisms such as their natural presence in the environment or contamination during food processing and storage. Their accumulation in the body can lead to harmful effects over time and their presence in foodstuffs is strictly regulated.
Reference materials offer key advantages for laboratories, over and above those of quality control materials. With an improved degree of characterisation compared to proficiency tests or quality control materials, reference materials have a plethora of uses, including method calibration.
