Test Description

Spinach has well known nutritional benefits, such as a high protein level and large amounts of Vitamins such as Vitamin A. This food is becoming a larger part of peoples diets as consumers continue to become more health conscious, looking at calorie intake and nutritional values of products.

In response spinach production will inevitably increase, as manufacturers seek to gain from this increase in demand. As such accuracy within testing capabilities is of great importance to highlight unscrupulous growers, or improper use of fertilisers and other agricultural chemicals.

These potential risks can be increased as concentrations increase within puréed foodstuffs. Within this test nitrates within spinach puree are analysed.

Using Fapas real food matrices your proficiency testing results are comparable to routine testing practises, giving you a close to true benchmark of your testing capabilities from which to improve or maintain across a range of analytes and matrices.

Nitrate and nitrite derive from fertilisers used in agriculture and are used as food preservatives.  They are often detected in contaminated drinking water, cured meat products as well as fruits and vegetables.  Exposure at high levels can result in severe health issues. Regulatory limits exist for nitrate and nitrite in a variety of food products in the EU and elsewhere.
