Test Description

Nitrofurans are antimicrobial agents which are not authorised for use in food-producing animals in the EU. They are quickly metabolised from the parent compounds in vivo. Nitrofurans and their marker metabolites are subject to third country import Minimum Required Performance Limits (MRPLs) of 1 μg/kg employed within the EU.

Farmed prawns are growing in number to meet large amounts of global demand and as such exceed capture from wild fisheries. As this growth in farmed prawn increases it is key to maintain a healthy and high quality stock, hence the use of antibiotics and anti-microbial agents such as Nitrofurans. This gives great importance to the quality of routine testing within prawns and as such effective quality controls benchmarked through proficiency testing should be employed.

The Fapas veterinary medicine proficiency test (PT) materials are produced in keeping with EU MRLs or minimum required performance limit (MRPL) where MRLs are not set. The result reporting requirements are also in keeping with quality control guidelines laid out in EC/657/2002.

Fapas veterinary medicine PT materials include incurred residues as well as fortified animal products. The PTs are grouped in analytical chemical class/matrix combinations and combine identification and quantification. The PTs are suitable for all methods, including screening methods (for the detection of total amount of that chemical class).
