Test Description

The occurrence of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in foodstuffs is a major source of exposure to these carcinogenic compounds for humans.  Given the risk to human health from PAHs in food, the European Commission established maximum levels for PAHs and identified a group of 4 PAHs as indicators based on occurrence and toxicity in EC 1881/2006.

PAHs continue to be a risk to food safety across a range of foodstuffs, due to the widespread cooking methods associated with PAH addition. As a result effective testing capabilities aer needed to highlight any potentially high levels of PAHs within processed foodstuffs, such as palm oil. This is in an effort to promote high quality foodstuffs present within the global supply chain as well as protecting the end consumer from any potential contamination.

Palm oil enjoys a large demand worldwide owing to its versatility and low pricepoint. The addition of PAHs within this foodstuff is of particular concern owing to its uses wwithin  range of cooking methods including frying.

Fapas proficiency tests can offer an extensive tool from which to benchmark your testing ability and highlight areas for improvement to achieve high quality, credible test results.

This test measures individual PAHs, including the indicators for the occurrence of PAH in food, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and PAH4 (benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), benz[a]anthracene (BaA), benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) and chrysene (CHR)).

This test also includes a PAH4 sum, see commission regulation (EU) no 835/2011. Which take into account the 4 top indicators of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and give an accurate indication of high levels of specific PAHs within foodstuffs.
