Test Description

Prawns and shrimps are a popular and nutritious food which includes an array of vitamins and minerals and one of the most effective antioxidants astaxanthin (astaxanthin compounds are the reason for the colour change during cooking).  The total trade in prawns and shrimps was valued at 17.8 billion USD (2020), with over half of the supply coming from farms rather than being wild-caught.  However, the high amount of benefits for consumers comes with the associated risk of food poisoning caused by Salmonella. It has been established that approximately 16% of the prawn’s population is home or may be contaminated with these common intracellular pathogens.

This proficiency test is suitable for routine laboratory performance check as well as verification of standardised method or validation of a new laboratory method.

The proficiency test contains two test materials and the participants must provide results for each material (either detected or not detected in 25g) in order to obtain successful assessment. Identification of the target organism beyond Salmonella species is not required, and participants may use any method for detection or confirmation they want to use.

This material is created with real matrix which will contain background flora as well as the target organisms in order to provide a realistic testing challenge.
