Test Description

This proficiency test is for the quantification and identification of synthetic hormones. At natural levels these are not a problem, but levels might be artificially elevated, in order to gain advantage, especially for pork production. The gender of the animal is important in determining natural hormones, but detections in the wrong gender of animal, or unusually high levels in the right gender of animal,  can indicate mis-use. Urine and blood serum provide different matrices in which to analyse these hormones.

Whilst this proficiency test looks at individual synthetic hormones included also is the 'total synthetic hormones' for the benefit of participants using ELISA test kits.

Animal products for human consumption are tightly legislated and closely monitored for compliance. Veterinary medicines used in animals are likely to have a pharmacological effect in humans. Hence, for many veterinary medicines, there are extremely low maximum residue limits or even no MRL (i.e. any detection is non-compliant). The Fapas proficiency test materials are produced in keeping with EU MRLs or minimum required performance limit (MRPL) where MRLs are not set. The result reporting requirements are also in keeping with quality control guidelines laid out in EC/657/2002. Fapas veterinary medicine proficiency test materials include incurred residues as well as fortified animal products.

Synthetic hormones are polarising in the public eye, and as such the results of potential detections within foodstuffs face extensive scrutiny from a wide range of industries. By utilising proficiency tests to benchmark your testing capabilities, credible results can be found with a track record of accurate testing across a range of synthetic hormones.

Fapas proficiency tests aim to minimise this risk, and by benchmarking your testing ability, can provide you with the insights you need to make key improvements in your testing processes. This all helps you provide your clients with the confidence they need in your testing ability, allowing them to make the informed decisions needed within their business to achieve success.
