Test Description

Tetracyclines are an antibiotic used to maintain a healthy fish stock and therefore high quality fish. EU maximum residue limits (MRLs) of 600 μg/kg in fish kidney and 100 μg/kg in fish muscle are tightly regulated to protect from excessive human consumption within foodstuffs

Tetracyclines are seen more in farmed fish as the demand for fish based diets grows and supply increases to meet this new demand. Farmed fish is the more likely way farmers are meeting these rising global fish demands. The quantity of tetracyclines can increase within fish muscle if antibiotics are not used as part of good farming practices. High levels of this antibiotic are usually found in humans and mammals instead of fish.

Within this test individual tetracyclines plus 'total tetracyclines' can be identified for the benefit of participants using ELISA test kits.

Gram for gram fish have more muscle than any other vertebrate, a male salmon or tuna can be nearly 70% muscle, which is one reason why fish are so cost effective to consume. The muscles of fish are layered rather than bundled as in the other vertebrates. Fish muscle makes up the majority of the calorie intake in terms of diet as opposed to other parts of the fish and as such has a lower MRL. It is therefore important to employ effective testing practices to ensure you are meeting this lower levels of detection.

The Fapas proficiency test (PT) materials are produced inline with EU MRLs or minimum required performance limit (MRPL) where MRLs are not set. The result reporting requirements are also in keeping with quality control guidelines laid out in EC/657/2002.

Fapas veterinary medicine PT materials include incurred residues as well as fortified animal products. The PTs are grouped in analytical chemical class/matrix combinations and combine identification and quantification. The PTs are suitable for all methods, including screening methods (for the detection of total amount of that chemical class).
