Test Description

Herbs are a common target for economic fraud, due to the ease with which alternative and cheaper leaves can be used to adulterate the target herb increasing profits.

Common adulterants for Salvia (sage) and similar herbs include leaves from other species such as olive, myrtle, hazelnut, strawberry sandalwood and others. In a study carried out in 2020 25% of Salvia samples tested were found to be contaminated at fraudulent levels and in one case the contamination was such that the Salvia content was lower than the adulterating material.

The test material is suitable for analysis by microscopic and FTIR methods.
