Test Description

Gram for gram fish have more muscle than any other vertebrate, a male salmon or tuna can be nearly 70% muscle, which is one reason why fish are so cost effective to consume. The muscles of fish are layered rather than bundled as in the other vertebrates. Fish muscle makes up the majority of the calorie intake in terms of diet as opposed to other parts of the fish and as such has a lower MRL. It is therefore important to employ effective testing practices to ensure you are meeting these lower levels of detection.

Fish are a staple part of many diets and as such effective testing practises are required to determine the presence and levels of these compounds within the product and protect consumers from potentially unsafe levels of these chemicals.

Ethoxyquin is an antioxidant which is used as a pesticide and food preservative. Ethoxyquin was initially registered as a post-harvest pesticide to prevent scald in pears. It is also used as a feed additive in some countries. Therefore, it can lead to residues in farmed fish and other animals. Ethoxyquin is no longer approved in the EU as a pesticide or feed additive.

The Fapas proficiency test (PT) materials are produced in-line with EU MRLs or minimum required performance limit (MRPL) where MRLs are not set. The result reporting requirements are also in keeping with quality control guidelines laid out in EC/657/2002.
