This quality control material is to be used for mycotoxins in animal feed, including the masked mycotoxin DON-3-Glc. So called masked mycotoxins are produced as a plant defence mechanism, bio-transforming the mycotoxin into a less toxic form. However, the modified mycotoxin may be hydrolysed during digestion, releasing the more toxic parent compound.
Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi on agricultural commodities in the field or during storage. It is estimated at 25% of the world's food crops are affected, resulting in large commercial losses. Mycotoxins can cause serious health problems, including some being suspected carcinogens, and so are tightly regulated across the world.
