Test Description

This quality control material evaluates your testing ability for Nitrate as Sodium Nitrate and Nitrite as Sodium Nitrite within a milk powder test material.

Nitrate and nitrite are used as food preservatives but also derive from fertilisers used in agriculture.  They are often detected in contaminated drinking water, cured meat products as well as fruits and vegetables. Exposure at high levels can result in severe health issues. Regulatory limits exist for nitrate and nitrite in a variety of food products in the EU and elsewhere.

Nitrates can be found in milk powder through livestock grazing on land with high nitrate levels within grasses. This in turn is transferred to the milk to produce high levels of nitrate contamination in milk powder. Milk powder makes up a large proportion of infant formula, requiring accurate testing processes from which to determine high levels of nitrates in foodstuffs.

Quality control materials from Fapas can offer a valuable opportunity to highlight any areas of improvement within your testing practices. Through the use of quality control materials valuable staff training and instrumentation calibration activities can take place to maintain your testing abilities.
