It does not differentiate between the types of bacteria present nor does it indicate the total number of bacteria present in the water - only those capable of forming visible colonies under specified conditions on certain non-selective microbiological media. It gives a measure of the overall general quality of the pool water, and whether the filtration and disinfection systems are operating satisfactorily.

Germs from other swimmers and unsafe water supplies can easily contaminate pool water, especially if it isn’t properly disinfected. Contaminated recreational water can cause a variety of ailments and diseases, such as diarrhea, and skin, ear and upper respiratory infections, particularly if the swimmer's head is submerged. It is therefore fundamental to utilise our proficiency test to classify the quality of water. This ensures the safety of bathers’ health, as we are able to identify whether the filtration systems are working.

Proficiency testing activities are important to ensure only high-quality testing measures are used to highlight any potentially unsafe levels of a range of indicator organisms within this bathing water matrix. This can allow you to highlight any potential areas of improvement within your testing solution, to maintain the high-quality testing abilities your regulators, currently enjoy.
