The proficiency test is not currently within scope of accreditation to ISO 17043.
Virtual Proficiency Tests (Virtual PT) are normally provided where the shipping of a physical test material for laboratories to analyse is not an option, either due to the nature of the material (for example size, stability, inhomogeneity) or there are restrictions/prohibitions on shipping the type of material (dangerous pathogens, toxins, plant pathogens. Such PTs ae often used in a clinical setting, for example in histology for examination of slide preparations. Producing hundreds of homogenous slides is impossible so an image is used to provide an identical test ‘sample’ for all participants.
This proficiency test is designed to assess an analysts ability to recognise and accurately enumerate presumptive staphylococci and coagulase positive staphylococci colonies and calculate the level of each type in cfu/g in a food from the image and additional information provided such as the food, weight of sample analysed, and the dilution factor for the culture plate image.
Virtual PTs are often used as a tool by which to demonstrate analyst competence, because any variation between samples has been eliminated, as has the physical analysis of a material, and what is provided is effectively a reference standard for which the only variable is the interpretation of the standard by the individual analyst.
