Test Description

Traditionally, the amount of energy in a food stuff was measured by the so-called bomb calorimeter. This was a sealed container heated to combust all the sample and heat up water in contact with the container. Although this was a fun experiment, it is no longer practical to employ in real-world laboratories. Instead, the energy value of a food is mostly calculated from the major energy-containing components of the food, such as the fat, protein and carbohydrates. The calculation is therefore a theoretical energy value but one which can be used on a product label. The variance in energy value thus calculated would derive from different models used in the calculation. However, this in itself means that the calculation lends itself perfectly to a virtual proficiency test in which no physical item is sent to participants but basic information on the food components can be sent electronically for the participants to use their standard model to undertake the calculation.
