Test Description

Within this proficiency test a comprehensive fat analysis will be evaluated and will include total fat, saturates, mono-unsaturates, poly-unsaturates and total trans fatty acids within fat. Individual fatty acids will be included where these are sufficiently abundant in the test material.

This test material is a fat of animal origin and provides the opportunity to analyse for fatty acids with a different profile and analyse fatty acids that may not be present in dairy products or vegetable oils.

As the fatty acid profile is unique to each animal source, it will be useful for customers who want to test products to seek fat from particular animals such as pigs or cattle. And it can be useful in detecting adulteration.

Analysis can be useful for determining the fat quality, flavour precursors in meat, and the presence of potentially unhealthy trans fatty acids.

Fat is an essential part of the human diet, supplying nutritional components that the body needs to function. Too much fat in the diet, especially of nutritionally undesirable forms, can give rise to health problems. Hence, fat is subject to labelling requirements on food products and analyses are targeted towards this compliance.

To maintain this accurate testing required, Fapas proficiency tests should be used as part of a well-designed quality assurance programme, to highlight any areas of improvement required within your current testing arrangement. Fapas proficiency testing  can also help highlight areas of unconscious bias within your testing arrangement, from which to address and obtain accurate, repeatable results.
