Test Description
This proficiency test brings together four key microbiology quality indicators in a single test material to provide both a realistic sample for laboratories and excellent value for money. This product reflects the real-life laboratory practise of performing multiple tests on a single sample.
The total coliform test provided in this product includes faecal Coliforms and can be used alongside the Enterobacteriaceae and E. coli enumerations to indicate the potential risk that faecal pathogens could be present in the food. The Escherichia coli test doesn’t include any toxin producing or specifically pathogenic strains of this organism, and so can be used by routine laboratories to carry out enumeration of E. coli as a key hygiene test for faecal contamination.
Aerobic Plate Count is used as an indicator to determine the overall burden of microorganism able to grow aerobically in a product. Also known as Aerobic mesophilic count, Aerobic Colony Count, Standard Plate Count, Total Plate Count, Total Count or Total Viable Count, this provides an overall indication of the hygienic status of the processing. This test is typically used to ensure compliance with the production specification and shelf-life of a product rather and any association with the risk of contamination by enteric pathogens.
The proficiency test is suitable for laboratories performing the most probable number (MPN) enumeration methods for Escherichia coli, coliforms and Enterobacteriaceae as well as the widely used pour-plate method. The material will also contain additional background flora and is created using a real matrix to provide a realistic challenge for the tests performed.
This product is suitable for routine laboratory performance check as well as verification of standardised method or validation of a new laboratory method.
